About Us

  • 1930

    • 16 June 1930: Ivanovo State Medical Institute (ISMI) was established by decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the RSFSR on
      reorganizing medical education.
    • Decision driven by rapid industrial growth of the Ivanovo-Voznesensk textile region and an acute shortage of medical personnel.
    • 18 July 1930: Physician Vasily Grigoryevich Belov appointed as the first director.
    • 1 October 1930: First academic year began at 80 Negorelaya Street (now Sovetskaya Street).

    1930–1933

    • Initial facilities included five classrooms and one lecture hall.
    • Student dormitories organized on 10 Avgusta Street and Karl Marx Street.
    • Single medical-preventive faculty with therapeutic and surgical departments.
    • Annual intake set at 100 students.
    • Study duration: 4 years + 1 year internship; graduates received certificates to practice medicine.

    1934

    • 3 January 1934: Resolution adopted on the training of pediatricians.
    • Pediatric departments opened at 14 institutes, including Ivanovo.
    • Pediatric Faculty established; Boris Pavlovich Apollonov appointed dean.
    • Institute Council and Methodological Council created.
    • Position of Deputy Director for Research introduced.
    • Spring 1934: Foundation laid for the new main academic building at present-day F. Engels and Sovetskaya Streets.
    • First collection of scientific papers published (32 articles).

    1935

    • Institute became a two-faculty institution (medical and pediatric).
    • 20 June 1935: First regional “Medical Week” held in Ivanovo.
    • 23–24 June 1935:
       
      • Celebration of the 5th anniversary of the institute.
      • First graduation ceremony: 80 doctors graduated.

    1936

    • Regional congresses held:
       
      • Neurologists and psychiatrists
      • Obstetricians and gynecologists

    1937

    • First graduation of pediatricians: 97 specialists.

    1938

    • Regional congress of therapists held.
    • Scientific conference on malignant tumors organized.

    1939–1940

    • Institute expanded to 37 departments and 180 faculty members.
    • 57 faculty members held academic degrees and titles.
    • Over 400 research papers, 10+ monographs, and 25 dissertations completed.
    • November 1940: Opening of the new main academic (theoretical) building.

    1941–1945 (Great Patriotic War)

    • Institute refused evacuation and continued operations.
    • 1941: Two wartime graduations (June and December).
       
    • 1941–1945:
       
      • 11 graduating classes produced nearly 2,000 doctors.
      • Over 5,000 nurses and paramedics trained.
         
    • Blood service organized under Professor P.M. Maksimov:
       
      • 1,500 donors, over 2,000 liters of blood donated.
      • 105 tons of preserved blood sent to the front.
         
    • Faculty completed 200 wartime research papers, defending 16 candidate and 7 doctoral dissertations.

    Post-war period (late 1940s–1950s)

    • Rapid restoration and strengthening of infrastructure.
    • Emphasis on training specialists and rebuilding material base.
    • Institute became a leader in scientific organization of labor and education.

    1966

    • National newspaper Pravda described the institute as an “inventor university.”
    • Institute listed in the Book of Honor of the All-Union Society of Inventors and Innovators.

    1981

    • Institute named after A.S. Bubnov by decree of the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR.

    1984

    • Faculty of Advanced Medical Studies established.
    • Later transformed into the Institute of Postgraduate Education.

    1993

    • Three new faculties opened:
       
      • Nursing (now management and higher nursing education)
      • Pre-university training
      • Faculty for foreign students

    1994

    • University granted the status of State Medical Academy.

    1996

    • 21 October 1996: Devastating fire destroyed six theoretical departments and major facilities.
    • Damage estimated at 78 billion rubles (1996 prices).
    • Classes resumed within three days at temporary locations.
    • Launch of the journal “Bulletin of the Ivanovo Medical Academy.”
    • Academic Council Prizes for young scientists established.

    1997

    • Establishment of the Academy’s own clinic by order of the Ministry of Health of Russia.

    2000

    • Academy clinic named after Professor E.M. Burtsev.
    • 2005:
       
      • Named Best Medical University of the Year by the International Health Assembly Foundation.
      • Awarded the “Profession-Life” and “Ertemaker” international awards.
         
    • 2006: Academy staff received commendation from President Vladimir Putin.

    2007

    • Opening of the Faculty of Dentistry.
