About Us

  • 1928

    • In October 1928, the Shcheglovsky Pedagogical College (later Kemerovo) was opened.
    • It was created to train primary school teachers and Pioneer leaders.
    • It had three departments: Russian-school, Chuvash-school, and Preschool.
    • The first batch had 40 students.

    1932

    • The city of Shcheglovsk was renamed Kemerovo.
    • The college became known as Kemerovo Pedagogical College.

    1937

    • By order of the People's Commissariat of Education, the college was renamed a Pedagogical School.

    1943

    • A correspondence (distance) department was opened.
    • The Chuvash department stopped functioning.

    1949

    • The Pedagogical School was reorganized into the Kemerovo Teachers’ Institute.
    • Training was provided in:
       
      • Physics and Mathematics
      • Russian Language and Literature
         
    • Study duration was 2 years.
    • The institute trained teachers for grades 5–7.
    • The Preschool department paused operations (1949–1959).

    1952

    • Government resolutions were issued to upgrade the institute to a higher level.

    1953

    • On September 1, 1953, the institute became the Kemerovo State Pedagogical Institute (KSPI).
       
    • Two faculties were opened:
       
      • Russian Language and Literature
      • Physics and Mathematics

    1954

    • The History Department was opened.

    1957

    • Construction of a new academic building began on Sovetsky Avenue.

    1962

    • The Faculty of Foreign Languages was established.

    1963

    • The Faculty of Chemistry and Biology was opened.

    1964

    • The Faculty of Physical Education was opened.
    • Physics and Mathematics became separate faculties.
    • History and Philology were split into independent departments.

    1965

    • The first doctoral dissertations were defended at KSPI.

    1970

    • A preparatory department (workers’ faculty) was opened.

    1973

    • Government resolutions approved the creation of a state university.

    1974

    • On January 1, 1974, Kemerovo State University (KemSU) was officially established.
    • KSPI was reorganized into a university.
    • Professor V. A. Mikhailov became the first Rector.
    • The university started with 10 faculties.
    • A new university building opened on Tereshkova Street.

    1978

    • The Faculty of Economics and Law was divided into two separate faculties.

    1980

    • The main academic building (Building No. 1) was opened.
    • Construction of lecture halls and humanities buildings was completed.

    1981

    • KemSU won 1st place among universities of the RSFSR.
    • Won 3rd place in the All-Union competition for student life organization.

    1982

    • KemSU’s Komsomol organization was recognized as one of the best in the country.

    1983

    • The Kemerovo branch of the Financial and Economic Institute merged with KemSU.
    • KemSU ranked 1st in safety standards among universities in the RSFSR.

    1984

    • KemSU received the Challenge Red Banner for outstanding achievements.
    • Ranked 2nd in the All-Russian competition for student welfare.

    1986

    • Student construction teams of KemSU were recognized as the best in the region.

    1989

    • A Health Center was opened.

    1990

    • An Intersectoral Regional Center for Advanced Training was established.

    1995

    • The Faculty of Social Psychology was opened.

    2002

    • KemSU received a gold medal for quality and innovation.

    2003

    • The Faculty of Political Science and Sociology was established.

    2004

    • KemSU became a laureate of the “One Hundred Best Universities” competition.

    2007–2009

    • The university received international European Quality awards.
    • Awarded certificates and quality marks for education standards.

    2013

    • The Kuzbass State Pedagogical Academy merged with KemSU.

    2017

    • KemSU became a Flagship University of Russia.
    • It was recognized as a center for innovative, technological, and social development of the region.

    2018

    • On February 1, 2018, the Kemerovo Institute of Food Science and Technology was merged with KemSU.
