1943: On May 22, 1943, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR decided to open a medical institute in Yaroslavl using the evacuated
Minsk and Vitebsk Medical Institutes from Belarus. Professor Z. K. Mogilevchik from the Minsk Medical Institute became the first director. During
its time in Yaroslavl, the Belarusian Medical Institute graduated one batch of 47 doctors. Out of them, 33 doctors were sent to work in the newly
liberated areas of Belarus, four top students joined postgraduate studies, and ten graduates volunteered as doctors in the Red Army.1944: On August 15, 1944, the Council of People’s Commissars ordered the opening of a new institution, the Yaroslavl Medical Institute.
Admissions were opened for all years under a single faculty, the Faculty of General Medicine. Classes started with 997 students, mainly
from the Yaroslavl region (75.9%), Kostroma (10%), and Vologda (around 5%). About 10% of students had previously studied at other
universities, and many had interruptions in their education.1945: The first group of doctors graduated from the Yaroslavl State Medical Institute. Among the 53 graduates was Mikhail Perelman,
who later became a well-known academician and surgeon.1948: The institute held its first graduation of medical residents.
1954: For the first time, students from the Yaroslavl State Medical Institute traveled to Kazakhstan to take part in the development of virgin
and unused lands.1966: A new morphological building was opened, and the Dental Faculty was established.
1970: The Faculty of Pediatrics was created to address the serious shortage of pediatric doctors in the region.
1972: Theoretical Building No. 5, located at 6 Chkalov Street, was opened.
1982: The Faculty of Pharmacy began operations.
1992: The university started admitting foreign students.
1994: The Yaroslavl State Medical Institute was renamed the Yaroslavl State Medical Academy (YSMA).
2009: Theoretical Building No. 7 at 2 Chekhov Street was opened. At the same time, the Center for Practical Skills Development and
the Russian Endoscopic Training Center were launched.2014: Ahead of its 70th anniversary, the academy received the status of a State Medical University.
2015: The Faculty of Clinical Psychology and Social Work was established.
2017: Basic departments of Yaroslavl State Medical University were set up in regional clinical hospitals in Kostroma and Vologda.
2022: The Institute of Pharmacy was established.
2023: Training for international students began using an intermediary language under Russian educational programs.
2024: The Vologda branch of Yaroslavl State Medical University and a representative office in Rybinsk were opened.
The Faculty of Fundamental and Preventive Medicine also began its work. -
